This is probably coming from all sorts of left field, but who's not satisfied with just a Persona? Maybe you want your character to have some combat ability of their own and not have to rely on it?
Fortunately, I have a potential solution for that.
See, Faris here is from Final Fantasy 5 and has all of the Fire Crystal shards with her. Carrying one with you while you fight will slowly (something like one ability per month, faster if you fight a lot) imbue you with the skills of legendary warriors that almost no one knows anything about other than their job title or skillset. (They also come with costume changes.)
You can use all the skills right away, actually, you just need to keep the shards on you to be able to use them without it.
Unfortunately, she only has the Fire Crystal pieces so she can only do this with like five people at a time, and with the following jobs (here listed with all their commands and passives in the order learned):
- Beastmaster: Sometimes the best way to fight is actually to make your enemies fight for you.
-- Calm: Prevent animal-like or beast-like enemies from moving or acting for a short time.
-- Control: Tries to subvert one enemy to your will. If it succeeds, you take that enemy's turns instead of your own (this doesn't work on bosses, and wears off if the enemy in question takes physical damage).
-- Catch: Tries to take one enemy with low HP and take it. Sadly, you don't get to keep it, as when it's released it'll do one attack and then disapper. (This also doesn't work on bosses, although you can release monsters against them...)
-- Equip Whips: Become proficient in one of the most commonly used BDSM equipment types e- I mean, be able to whip it good, even when not a Beastmaster anymore.
- Geomancer: If where you fight is a concern this might not be a good fit for you, but the Geomancer's skillset revolves around using terrain against enemies in the form of nifty magic attacks.
-- Gaia: The aforementioned nifty magic attacks. What exactly will be gotten out of this is pretty random (the full list of effects in the game is here but since there are no modern cities in FFV maybe we can make up a few???) but kinda sorta varies depending on the surrounding area (so, for example Whirlpool might pop up more often around the coast or river).
-- Find Pits: This is a passive skill, so it's not going to be useful in combat so much... but it prevents you from triggering traps. At all. Mostly pit traps though.
-- Light Step: Also passive but makes you the best firewalker ever. Thorns? Lava? Psssh, doesn't matter to me I'll just cross it like it was nothing.
- Ninja: This job actually falls somewhere in between "anime ninja" and "actual historical ninja".
-- Smoke: If you're in over your head, use this. Instant smoke bomb, for when you need to run today to fight another day. Guaranteed escape from any non-boss combat.
-- Image: You know that thing where sometimes people go so fast they leave afterimages? This is that only you don't have to move. Causes the next two incoming physical attacks to miss entirely.
-- First Strike: Passive. Makes you stealthier and therefore better able to catch your enemies off-guard.
-- Throw: How do you turn anything into a weapon? By throwing it at someone really hard.
-- Dual-Wield: Two swords are stronger than one. Become proficient at using one weapon in each hand (within reason of course, no one can use two broadswords...)
- Ranger: Bow-toting hunters that also really like nature.
-- Animals: This would call small woodland creatures to help you but there kind of aren't a lot of those around.
-- Aim: Sick of enemies dodging your attacks? Worry no more, since aimed attacks will always hit. Just... don't use this if you're not seeing straight.
-- Equip Bows: Now you can be a master of archery even when not wearing a green pointy feather cap.
-- Rapid Fire: Shoot (or swing) your weapon really fast to deal about double normal damage (four hits at half power.) This even works if you're not using a bow.
- Bard: You didn't think a harp was a weapon, did you? Singers that support others in combat and are also really useful against undead.
-- Hide: Retreat away enough from the action that you can't be attacked but not far enough away to actually escape combat. If you have long-range abilities this could be useful. It can also be useful if you can throw stuff.
-- Sing: The Bard's real trademark. There are eight songs Faris knows and you automatically can use all of them. The first four take effect more-or-less instantaneously:
--- (Alluring Air): Attempts to confuse all enemies.
--- (Romeo's Ballad): Tries to Stop enemies for a few turns (2 turns).
--- (Mighty March): Bestows a Regen effect on all allies (they recover a small amount of HP each turn).
-- and the second set are continuous, taking damage will interrupt them and cause them to lose effect.
--- (Requiem): Deals heavy Light-element damage to undead enemies.
--- (Sinewy Etude): Increases the power of all allies' Physical attacks (i.e. raises Strength).
--- (Mana's Paean): Increases the power of all allies' magical attacks (i.e. raises Magic Power).
--- (Swift Song): Increases all allies' Speed (slowly, but it'll at least get everyone acting before enemies).
--- (Hero's Rime): Makes all allies just all-around better at fighting (i.e. increases everything, but more slowly and to less effect than the other three.
-- Equip Harps: Now you can use harps as weapons by playing them without actively being a bard.

I'd prefer to get characters that didn't act in a combat capacity in their canons for this. Anyone interested, please comment!
(Meanwhile, I'll see if I can't have her regain some of the other warriors' shards to expand options a little...)
